Shelton Clothiers Bringing Fine Retailing Back to Main Street

MEMPHIS, Tennessee, March 31, 2005 – This June, Shelton Clothiers will open its doors to the public at 147 South Main, bringing a level of fine retailing to Main Street that hasn’t been seen since many shops closed their doors several decades ago.

Thomas Shelton, who spent 15 years with James Davis before deciding to step out on his own, says the new store will offer better men’s clothing with personalized service.

“Our store will be very user-friendly, yet elegant and our customers can expect to be pampered,” said Shelton. “The store will have hardwood floors, first-class dressing rooms, antiques, mirrored fitting rooms, a wine bar, and other details to make customers as comfortable as possible.”

Shelton is leasing 2,700 square feet of space next to Viking Culinary Arts Center at Main and Peabody Place. The retail floor will consist of 1,300 square feet overlooking Main Street and the downtown trolley line.

“There are a number of reasons we decided to open a store downtown,” said Shelton. “The area is experiencing tremendous growth in areas such as sporting events, entertainment and restaurants, and retail will be the next sector to take advantage of the opportunities downtown. I actually started writing my business plan when AutoZone Park was completed.”

Shelton says owning a small business on Main Street is in his blood.

“My parents owned a retail store on Main Street in my hometown of Rochelle, Illinois,” he explained. “I’ve worked in fine men’s clothing ever since, and dreamed of one day opening my own store.”

As Shelton began pursuing his dream and trying to find the perfect location to set up shop downtown, he forged a new friendship with Jack Belz, chairman and CEO of Belz, who was instrumental in persuading Shelton to look for a space in Peabody Place.

“Small businesses are the backbone of the community,” said Belz. “As downtown continues to grow and more people move downtown, retailers such as Shelton Clothiers and other small businesses will be vital to meeting their needs.”
