Germantown Students Get a Taste of China

MMEMPHIS, Tennessee - - Students from the Gifted Program at Germantown Middle School got a glimpse of Chinese life during a recent visit to the Peabody Place Museum and Gallery.

More than 100 fifth and sixth graders toured the Chinese art museum Tuesday, November 30 and Wednesday, December 1, as part of a semester-long course taught by APEX teachers James Aldengers and Jennifer Triplett .

After spending the summer in China on a Fulbright grant, Mr. Aldingers decided to bring a taste of Asian culture back home. Students have spent the past several months studying the Chinese culture, language and government. During their visit to the Peabody Place Museum and Gallery, students got a first-hand look at the artistic legacy of the Manchu’s Quing Dynasty, which reigned from 1644 to the revolution of 1911.

The Peabody Place Museum and Gallery, located downtown in the Pembroke Building at 119 South Main Street, features one of the country’s most extensive and rare - collections of Chinese art. The museum features art from the private collection of Jack and Marilyn Belz. Belz is chairman and chief executive officer of Belz Enterprises, a leading innovator in real estate development with interests throughout the South and much of the country.

Hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 to 8, Saturday from 9 to 5 and Sunday from 10:30 to 5. Admission is $5 for adults, $4.50 for Senior Citizens and $4 for children under 12.
