Shelton Clothiers Set To Open June 24 on Main Street with Historically-Themed Event

MEMPHIS, Tennessee, June 13, 2005 – Shelton Clothiers, a men’s fine retailing shop at 147 South Main, will host a grand opening on June 24 with an event that will celebrate the past and the future of retailing downtown.

The event, “Tying Back to the Past,” will begin at 4 p.m. with a “tie-cutting” officiated by Thomas Shelton, owner of Shelton Clothiers; Jack Belz, Belz chairman and CEO; and Jeff Sanford, president of the Center City Commission. One hundred and forty-seven ties will be tied together, symbolizing the new retailer’s street address.

As a special recognition of the critical role retailers played in Main Street’s booming past, Jimmy Grisanti, a former downtown men’s retail employee and recent retiree from James Davis, will speak at the ceremony. Continuing with the theme, old photographs of Main Street and its retail shops will be on display courtesy of the Memphis Heritage Foundation.

Following the ceremony, a reception will be held for invited guests, with a jazz trio providing entertainment.

“We are very excited to have this new clothier store as part of the historical block of Main Street,” said Andrew J. Groveman, senior vice president of Belz. “Looking back many years ago, Main Street was the center of all the retail activities for our entire community. I believe this opening foretells of additional developments that will take place on Main Street.”

Shelton, who spent 15 years with James Davis before deciding to step out on his own, is looking forward to returning a level of fine retailing to Main Street that hasn’t been available seen since many shops closed their doors several decades ago.

The new store will offer better men’s clothing with personalized service, as well as first-class dressing rooms, antiques and a wine bar.

“We want our customers to feel pampered throughout their shopping experience,” said Shelton.

Shelton Clothiers will offer sought-after clothing lines such as Tallia, XMI, and Kenneth Gordon.
